This book first appeared in
1998 and sadly was to be the last book to be designed by Marion Clayson
before her death early in 1999. David says, "Marion got the
idea for the stick figures framing the poems from my habit of drawing a
little running man when I sign a book." Most popular poems here
are Lullaby for Modern Mamas (below), Er, Hello Auntie
Maureen and Homework Hokey-Cokey.
Interesting Book
Fact: The chorus for the poem The Doctor popped
into David's head while he was sitting in the surgery, sniffing with
hay-fever. He went straight home and wrote the rest that day.
Lullaby for Modern Mamas
Hush
little baby, don’t you make no noise,
mama’s gonna buy you a gold Rolls Royce,
and if
that Rolls Royce just won’t do,
mama’s gonna swap it for a BMW,
and if
that BMW’s slow,
mama’s gonna order you a new Volvo,
and if
that Volvo doesn’t arrive,
mama’s gonna get you a 4 wheel drive,
and if
that 4 wheel drive won’t motor,
mama’s gonna trade it for a used Toyota,
and if
that car don’t even crawl,
mama’s going out for a small Vauxhall,
and if
that small Vauxhall keeps stoppin’,
mama’s buyin’ you instead a Reliant Robin,
and if
that Robin gets stuck in a jam,
mama’s gonna swap it for a brand new pram,
and if
that pram, it doesn’t suit you,
mama’s buyin’ you a barrow from B&Q,
and if
that barrow’s no good, by golly,
mama’s gonna borrow you a Tesco trolley,
and if
that trolley doesn’t do the trick,
mama’s goin’ shoppin’ for a walking stick,
and if
that stick should one day crack,
you’ll be carryin’ mama round on your back.
